Welcome, 2019-2020 School Year!
The staff of Johnstown Middle School is excited to begin another year! While our district has met the charge to provide facilities that are conducive to the community’s growth and to meet the needs of our students, our teachers are working diligently to plan and deliver instruction, programs, and interventions designed to grow independent learners who are college and career ready.
Though summer brought time for relaxation and fun, it also provided time to revise curriculum, review test scores, and restructure schedules. Several changes have taken place over the past couple months that we hope will be of great benefit to our students. C-TEC has taken over our former Exploring Technology and Invention and Innovation classes and will be offering Pre-Engineering classes, one required for 6th graders and one for 7th/8th graders. Our Computer One and Computer Two classes have been revised to more closely align with the Informational Technology curriculum offered in STEM programs.
Greater opportunities for instruction and remediation have been added to the master schedule. We have added an additional period of Physical Education this year. While PE is a class requested by many students, it is also an opportunity for students to earn high school credit during their 8th grade year. Along with our Reading for Success intervention class, we now have Math for Success. These daily scheduled periods give struggling students time to revisit content and relearn skills.
Like last year, the middle school students are able to explore College Credit Plus (CCP) courses. If deemed eligible through testing, our students can attend classes at the high school to earn high school and college credits. JMS teachers also work closely with the Licking County Educational Service Center to obtain professional development that allows them to better understand and meet the needs of our advanced students. Setting lofty expectations and challenging our students to meet those expectations ensures greater success at the secondary level and beyond.
Finally, I am happy to share that Jeff Rings will be serving as Dean of Students for Johnstown Middle School. While Mr. Rings will still be overseeing the JOLT program, he will be working out of the middle school and will be spending a good bit of his time with your children. Mr. Rings taught music at Adams Middle School and Johnstown High School for many years. He comes to us with over thirty years of experience and a love of learning. Mr. Rings is delighted to rejoin the JMS staff and looks forward to working with your family.
As you have heard, great things are happening at JMS. We thank you for trusting us with your children and look forward to partnering with you in the year ahead.
